For a number of Kiwi’s, summer is the perfect time to pack up the car, bundle the kids and pets in the back seat and head off on holiday. Whether heading away to our favourite beach, off to visit the family or simply escaping the daily grind, we love our vacation time.
However, there is one sure-fire way to have your holiday completely ruined. Returning home to find someone has broken into your home and knicked your valuables. It’s unfortunate but it is something we all need to be aware of when we head away for an extended period of time.
Because no one should have to go through this pain, we’ve put together a short list of simple but effective ways to prevent those unwanted visitors.
Light it up!
Security lighting is a great way to ward off any potential visitors while you’re away. So, it pays to invest in some quality sensor lights around the outside of your home.
Motion sensor lights are great, as they turn on whenever there is movement around the perimeter of your home. Meaning any unwanted guest will be hit with a spotlight as soon as they approach the house. Whether it’s the neighbour's dog or a potential burglar, hopefully, they will be scared off by the bright lights.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to think about the lighting within your home as well. For many, it is commonplace to leave a few lights on while your away. However, besides from hitting your power bill hard, it is also obvious that you’re not home after a few days. Instead, look at purchasing lights that have timers on them. Turning your lights on at specific times of the day, to truly mimic your normal routine, does wonders for increasing security.
Where’s the hidden key?
The classic spare key under a rock or potplant trick is perfect if you lose your keys, but it is also highly predictable. If you are heading away for a long time, think about removing the spare key altogether.
If you have a friend or neighbour watching the house, give them the spare set of keys, instead of telling them where it is hidden.
Don’t let them see it
The old saying, ‘out of sight, out of mind’ is the perfect mindset when you are heading away this year. Burglars normally target items that are fairly small and easy to carry, such as laptops, tablets, jewellery or cash. But what if they can’t find these valuable things?
If you aren’t going to take your valuables, make sure you place them in a safe location that isn’t easily visible. Such as in a safe, tucked in clothing pockets or cabinets under lock and key. This will give the appearances that there is nothing easy to grab in the house.
If you have anything stored outside, say in the garage, carport or deck, try to cover it up as best as possible.
G’day neighbour
If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to head next door and across the road to meet your neighbours. If you have a good relationship with them, asking them to keep an eye on your house while you’re away, is ideal.
If you want, provide them with a key and your details just in case something does go wrong. Another idea is letting them know they can use your driveway or pool if they like. By doing this, it will give the appearance that people are still living in the house.
Update your social setting
The holidays are a time to spend with family and friends, enjoying each others company and catching up. And, Kiwi’s love sharing these times and the adventure we have on our social media platforms.
However, be mindful of what you put out there. A good idea is to review your privacy setting to ensure only your direct family and friends can view what your upload, not just anyone.
If you are heading away for an extended period of time, be careful of posting anything that will outline the amount of time you’re away for. Just to be safe, you never know who may stumble upon your profile.
The holidays are a time for us to celebrate and unwind, not stress or worry about whether our house and belongings are secure. It’s important you take every necessary precaution to ensure your holidays are not interrupted or ruined by these nasty surprises. These are just a few simple tips for protecting your home while you’re enjoying your much deserved time off.
